Organic Foam Mattress
Organic foam mattresses, more commonly known simply as organic mattresses, have become increasingly popular over the past few years. This sudden popularity is probably due to the increased interest in organic food. Indeed, since the commencement of the organic food craze, every company, whether involved in produce or not, has desired being labeled as organic. In the case of mattresses, this indicates that no synthetic materials were used to create the materials used to form the mattress.
The vast majority of mattresses on the market are made from synthetic materials. In fact, the typical mattress that people think of is synthetic. Memory foam mattresses like the Sleep Number bed or any mattress released by Tempur-Pedic are 100% synthetic. Of course, these beds are synthetic because they were fabricated and designed to produce maximum comfort. This required the creation of certain custom materials.
Although many people have turned to organic mattresses, large mattress buyers, such as hospitals have completely disregarded them. Organic beds, as with all other organic products, are quite a bit more expensive than other products, making them completely impractical for large consumers. Also, organic beds have not been treated with chemicals that dilute the oils found in cotton. As such, many people are allergic to organic mattresses. Thus, hospitals, which must be hypoallergenic at all times, are full of synthetic beds.
Many cheaper forms of beds, such as the futon, do not utilize anything organic. Otherwise, they would not be able to compete in the inexpensive bed market. Production would necessitate higher prices, effectively pulling them from the market. Such companies would in essence be economically disabled if they made such a decision.
Many consumers on a budget simply cannot afford to purchase an entire organic mattress. However, they can buy organic toppers and pads. These accessories while not necessary complete a bed set. These are made from completely organic cotton, wool, or latex. These materials have experienced no chemical treatment whatsoever. As previously mentioned, this has caused allergic reactions in quite a few people.
There has been a plethora of arguments about whether organic mattresses are any better than their counterparts. Some claim that the various chemicals used to make generic mattresses can negatively affect one’s health. However, others state, and are correct in saying, that there is little evidence that a person’s bed, regardless of what is used to make it, causes many of the health problems associated with them. However, organic mattresses are more environmentally friendly, which is always a plus. Thus, the ratings for organic beds are similar to those for higher-quality synthetic beds, but lower than Tempur-Pedic beds, which lead the mattress market.
Organic mattresses are much like their produce versions. They are a nice thought, and are slightly more beneficial for the environment. However, they are much more expensive than everything else is on the market, making them highly impractical for the casual buyer. As such, an organic foam mattress probably is not the best choice for the general market; however, it is excellent for those with money to burn.
